Blog system added to user profiles

Blogs Launched!

Tuesday, 27 September 2005

It's true! We've launched a Blog service for our VIP members. Just click on the new tab on your profile page and join the blogging phenomenon!

A blog (originally short for 'Weblog') is your voice on the site. You can use it as your personal diary, you can share your thoughts with the community or you can even join in with other people's blogs if they've allowed you. Sam has set up a shared blog on the subject of Seagulls (!) to which you're welcome to contribute if you have anything... er... to add...

Find Sam's blog by clicking the following link:

www.realsitges.com/samwell/blog

...using the same format above you can link directly to your own blogs once you've started writing them!

Get in there and get creative! A selection of the best blogs will be promoted through the site.

Since we launched blogs a few of you have written in to ask just exactly what a blog is...

Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is an online journal or newsletter that is usually fairly frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blog entries are usually in chronological order and our blogs offer the option for users to comment on entries. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author.

It's basically just a fancy term for 'online diary', which is why we've linked our blogs to user profiles with a tab.

Other terms that you may hear thrown around at the pub:

Blogging - this is used to describe the activity of writing entries to a blog.

Blogger - Someone who keeps a blog.

Since blogs are online they are an instant way to publish to whatever audience is watching. It's like your own personal newspaper! The blog phenomenon has really caught on over the last few years and far from just being simple diaries, you'll now find blogs are an integral part of major news sites such as Guardian Unlimited. They publish news stories to their newsblog which throws open the news item to public comment, much as we do.

What you're now reading is a comment. It's providing additional information/opinion following the original blog entry ("Blogs Launched!"). The beauty of this system is that if I've missed something or failed to explain something properly, someone else can create another comment below this one and offer further explanations. Users can also go back and edit their own entries at a later date - making it easy to tighten up writing, correct mistakes etc.

Hoorah for Blogs!
