The driving rain only seemed to add to the sense of community as a crowd gathered under umbrellas for the World AIDS day vigil at Sackville Gardens.
The Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus provided a moving opening to the proceedings, with various figures speaking and reading about the issues surrounding HIV. We heard from Paul Fairweather, Ben Amponsah and Jon Atkin, and Ilana Jacobs sang an emotive "Deep River" for us. Candles were lit in silence and representatives of Operation Fundraiser laid a floral ribbon in memory of those lost.
Although obviously not as big a gathering as the Pride weekend vigil, this was every bit as moving and every bit as important an event.
The evening was rounded off with some very welcome mince pies and mulled wine at Via Fossa.

Manchester Pride has been around for a number of years, previously in the guise of Mardi Gras, GayFest and the Ab Fab Weekend. In recent years, the organisation has grown significantly, focussed its aims and provided a network for community groups, the City Council and the gay businesses - no mean feat! The next Manchester Pride date for your diary:
Saturday, 12th July - Sunday, 12th October
