Berlin Christopher Street Day 2008...
review
There's definitely something a little different about Berlin's pride celebrations.
Germany's pride events are known as 'CSD's - Christopher Street Days - in celebration of the New York riots that marked a turning point in LGBT history. They take place throughout the country on different days and, certainly in Berlin anyway, they seem to be an altogether more relaxed affair than the average pride festival.
The march (it still has the status of a protest march rather than a 'parade') took around seven hours to find its way through the city to end with live acts, stalls and an early evening gathering of like-minded people. Although there were crowds of people watching the march, there were many more joining in. If you like the music then you're encouraged to step onto the tarmac and dance with the floats as they meander slowly along the winding route! It's essentially one huge street party - and it's a lot of fun.
